Maintaining a fish tank can be a very rewarding and fun activity. One of the advantages of the hobby is that with preparation and patience, you can now possess a beautiful fish tank.
There are countless types of aquarium freshwater fish, which is both the best thing along with a very bad thing. I say bad since there are some fish that either require additional care or they are more temperamental. These fish tend to be more demanding and so are not the best fish for the beginner’s first aquarium. Sometimes it is difficult for that beginner who’s picking out fish to know the great (easy) in the bad (temperamental) which can lead to frustration and wasted cash on new fish.
Knowing that, this is a quick starter listing of fish that are ideally suited to the novice. They are beautiful, active, and more importantly, hardy fish. That’s not to express buying these fish is definitely an excuse for lax care and maintenance, it simply means that minor fluctuations in temperature or pH won’t lead them to be lost.
Guppies – These fish are hardy, inexpensive, and come in many beautiful varieties. The males have long, flowing, multi-colored fins and they are generally quite active in the upper and middle water levels in the tank. As a bonus, they might be among the easiest fish to reproduce, so you may wind up witnessing the wonder of live-bearing fish with no effort on your part.
Plecostomus – Commonly just called the pleco, there are a number of pleco species that are available towards the aquarium keeper. The majority are very hardy fish and fit in with the audience of “algae eaters”. They will indeed eat algae inside your tank, but they need to feed in addition to that. The pleco will occupy the lower degree of your tank and with his under beautiful looks (OK, they’re ugly), he’ll definitely give a little bit of personality for your tank.
Gouramis – Including the Dwarf, Blue, and Kissing Gourami. These fish add a nice component of size (they aren’t huge, but a blue could grow to 4+ inches) and color to any community tank. Most people that are interested in aquariums understand the Kissing Gourami and a pair can make an excellent accessory for nearly all tank.
Swordtails – Using their deep orange color and the male’s namesake sword-shaped tail, these fish add well with a community tank.
Cory Cats – Short for Corydoras, this is another group of fish with many varieties. They’re fine as a single, but like a group they’ll school together exploring and scouring the foot of the tank, and they are a fun fish to possess patrolling your aquarium.
Danios – This is another fish with lots of varieties. I include them since they’re good, hardy fish that are extremely active and never seem to exhaust. The zebra, leopard, and giant danios are popular fish and can give a large amount of activity to your tank, although some people find their constant activity level almost a little too much, so remember that.
Goldfish – Discuss endless variety! Goldfish have it and much more. Colors, fins, size, eyes, scales…you will find enough to write many books in it. As such, they’re a well known option for a species tank, that is a fish tank39 with only different types of goldfish. They are very tolerant of the wide range of temperatures but i am not saying they’ll tolerate bad water. They do produce a lot of waste and may need a bit more water changing than another fish, however they still make a great choice for someone who is simply getting into the fish keeping hobby.
This list is only a small sample of fish that are perfect for the beginner, however it covers a great cross-section. There is variety in color, size, activity level, and water column level (from surface to bottom). It is certainly Aquarium Freshwater Fish an excellent start and hopefully you will be lead toward many other wonderful catch your brand-new aquarium!
